A cryptocurrency blockchain is a decentralized public digital ledger that exists across a network which contains details of cryptocurrency transactions.

While the blockchain does not contain details of who owns the crypto addresses, in order for a scammer to convert the cryptocurrency into fiat money they will eventually have to transfer the cryptocurrency to a crypto exchange. Due to KYC regulations if you can identify the transaction where the cryptocurrency has been sent to an exchange it is then possible for the police to request through legal channels details of the exchange customer.

While there are numerous free blockchain explorers online that will allow any member of the public to download transaction information for a cryptocurrency address, many people may quickly become overwhelmed by the volume of information. Also it can be difficult to identify which addresses are exchange addresses.

In order to conduct investigations, Orion’s Director of Computer Forensics Services Andrew Smith has developed Blockchain Detective, an investigation tool that simplifies the downloading of cryptocurrency transactions. It automatically generates a visual representation of the transactions (one node per unique address) making it easy to follow the flow of cryptocurrency from one address to the next and automatically identifies exchange addresses.
